Element: Identify handler's assistance requirements
  • Discuss referral from health care professional with dog handler to confirm and/or clarify needs, while incorporating privacy considerations
  • Determine the specialised tasks required from an assistance dog based on individual prospective handler
  • Determine handler's ability to fit and use equipment for their assistance dog, and ensure dog's equipment needs complement those of the handler
       
Element: Identify assistance dog's equipment requirements
  • Identify leads, collars and other basic equipment requirements
  • Determine need for additional equipment and how equipment will be used according to task requirements
  • Confirm equipment requirements based on the handler and dog partnership
       
Element: Trial use of equipment with handler and assistance dog
  • Introduce and test the use of equipment chosen to ascertain if it is suitable for both handler and assistance dog
  • Adjust or change equipment as required
  • Instruct handler to use the equipment safely, according to animal welfare principles, dog training regulatory and public access requirements
  • Evaluate handler's use of the equipment to ensure safety and wellbeing of both handler and assistance dog

Assessment Tasks
